Cherrie Hughes joined the Research Program Development team at the University of Florida in the Office of Research in December 2015 to serve as Assistant Director for Industrial Outreach. She works closely with UF faculty, statewide institutes, research-focused entities, and other stakeholders to facilitate research interest, partnerships, collaboration, and funding from industrial entities that will benefit from UF’s breadth and depth of research expertise through building corporate, academic and government strategic alliances. As the Program Manager of the Florida High Tech Matching Grants Fund and the Seed Funding program UFLIPS, she helps connects industry with academic research partners to engage in translational research with a commercial outcome. Previously while working at the University of Maryland, in the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program at the A. James Clark School of Engineering, she recruited Maryland companies and faculty to the program, managed the proposal-to- award life cycle of the program, its technical projects, economic development metrics/tracking and created financial and administrative operations. She also successfully led the program to receive two economic development awards and worked with companies of all sizes and to spur innovation, technology development, and commercialization.
