David Ortendahl is a highly motivated connector of people who is frequently called upon at his institution to facilitate partnerships between academia and industry. As Director of Corporate Relations for WPI over the past four years, he has purposely bridged the Career Development Center and the Office of Corporate Engagement to align the development of strategic corporate partnerships. He leads primarily by example and attributes his success at WPI to servant-based leadership practices. He is a strong collaborator with corporations and is able to balance strategic vision with tactical needs.
Through his leadership at WPI over the past ten years, he helped to grow the corporate engagement model from the ground-up. As the first staff person dedicated to “employer relations” at WPI to becoming the first “Director, Corporate Relations” at WPI, he has regularly incorporated NACRO philosophies and best practices into action. Because of this work, the WPI Career Development Center has consistently risen in rankings, and is now a Top 5 Career Center in the US for 2018 according to Princeton Review.
As a member of NACRO for the past few years, David has found the community of NACRO to be welcoming and energizing. Through his work on the Benchmarking Committee in this same time-frame, he showed his comfort and ability with data analysis and became Co-Chair of the Member Survey Sub-Committee this past year. He worked hard with the sub-committee to incorporate the new "Salary Survey" into the yearly "Member Survey." This resulted in the highest NACRO member survey response rates ever.If elected, David hopes to continue to serve the NACRO community at a higher level, to drive positive change during this time of organizational growth, and to develop future leaders of NACRO.Significant NACRO Contribution
Significant NACRO Contribution
My most significant contribution will be in co-leading a new member survey to be complete by election time. The new 2018 member survey has been expanded to include demographic information and university attribute information as we move towards the inclusion of fields important to researchers that will help NACRO data become more notable and useful by researchers.
Additionally, our committee has been intentional about planning and follow-through. We have been consistently on-time, on-budget, and have steadily worked towards our goals. If elected, I hope to bring this same mentality to a broader team.
